Case studies, from brief to start date

This is how we write up a search: the seat, the brief, the shortlist and what happened after the start. The format, the terms behind every search and what clients have written to us are all below.

Six stations in every case file

Each case follows the search in the order it happened. We record what was decided at every station, so you can judge the work and not only the result.

Station 1 of 6: The seat

Records: the role, the level and why the seat mattered now

Before the brief

  • Who the hire reports to

The reporting line and the team around the seat.

  • The number the seat owns

The target, quota or metric the person in the seat is accountable for.

  • Why now

What changed in the business that made this the seat to fill.

Station 2 of 6: The brief

Records: the calibration call, held on day one

Day 1

  • The scorecard

The outcomes the hire must deliver, agreed with the hiring manager before the search starts.

  • The range

What the client could pay, and what the seat has to move.

  • The disqualifiers

The two or three things that genuinely rule a candidate out.

Station 3 of 6: The search

Records: where we looked and how we screened

Days 2 to 7

  • Sourcing

A targeted list built from people doing the job now, not a job board.

  • Screening

Every name screened for execution in the client's market, not for a CV that merely matches.

  • The first review

The first candidate goes into a live review so the search can be corrected early.

Station 4 of 6: The shortlist

Records: the three to five people we put forward

Days 8 to 10

  • How many

Three to five calibrated candidates, inside ten working days of the signed brief.

  • One page each

What they have run, why they fit this seat, pay expectations and notice period.

  • The gaps

Where each candidate is weak, written down before the client meets them.

Station 5 of 6: The hire

Records: interviews, offer and start date

After the shortlist

  • The interviews

Scheduling and references, handled by us and run at the client's pace.

  • The offer

Negotiation and offer management, including the counter-offer conversation.

  • The start

The date the hire started, which is when the fee falls due.

Station 6 of 6: After the start

Records: the ramp and the check-ins

Post-hire

  • The ramp

How the first months went against what the client planned.

  • The check-ins

Whether the hire is still in seat at each post-hire check-in.

  • In the client's words

What the client says about the hire, quoted only with their permission.

Every case file reports

  • Working days, brief to shortlist
  • Candidates shortlisted
  • Interviews held
  • Offer made and accepted
  • Days to start date
  • Where each candidate was sourced
  • Still in seat at each check-in

What a reader can check

A case study is only useful if you can tell how much of it to trust. These are the rules every case file is held to.

  1. Names only with permission

A client’s name or logo appears only with their written agreement. Without it, we describe the market, the seat and the size of the company.

  2. Every figure traces to the file

Dates, counts and outcomes come from the search record. A number we cannot trace is not published.

  3. Confidential stays confidential

A search that was confidential at the time stays that way. We describe the seat and the market, and nothing that points back to the client or the people involved.

Filed by market, because the market sets the profile

A strong seller in one market is an average one in the next, so every case file is filed under the market it was run in. Pick yours to see the seats we fill there.

Questions about our case studies

Case studies are filed by market and by seat. Tell us the market and the seat when you brief us, and say you would like an example. We will share a case where the client has agreed to it. The six markets are on our industries page.

We publish a client’s name or logo only with their written permission, and some searches are confidential from the start. Where we do not have permission, we describe the market, the seat and the size of the company, and nothing that points back to the client.

Six stations: the seat, the brief, the search, the shortlist, the hire and what happened after the start. Each one records dates, counts and decisions from the search file, so you can see how a search ran as well as how it ended.

You see a shortlist of three to five calibrated candidates within ten working days of a signed brief. The clock starts when the brief is signed. See how an engagement works.

On go-to-market placements the fee is a flat 15% of first-year base, paid only once your hire starts, with no retainer and no upfront fee. Technical and project delivery searches are quoted against the brief before work starts, on the same contingency basis.

We recruit across six markets and two desks: go-to-market, and technical and project delivery. Browse the roles we recruit or the markets we hire into to find the seat closest to yours.
