A motion designer makes ads, launches, social posts and your website move: animated explainers, logo stings and interface motion. Show reels are cut to impress, so we screen for finished pieces made to a business deadline, how they work inside a brand system, and how fast they turn a static asset into a moving one.

What a good motion designer has done by day 90

Motion earns its place when static assets that underperformed start to work harder. Each stage below has a signal that predicts it, and we test for that signal before you meet anyone.

Milestone 1 of 5: Learns the brand and the queue

Weeks 1 and 2

Brand guidelines, existing assets, the templates in use and the requests already waiting. Ships a first set of small pieces, such as animated versions of existing social graphics or ad units, from files that already exist.

On track looks like finished animated pieces in use by the end of week two, on brand, needing one round of changes.

How we test for it before you meet them

A short timed exercise in our screen: an existing static ad, animated for two sizes. We score timing, clarity and how they treat the brand, not the effects.

Milestone 2 of 5: A template system for motion

Weeks 3 to 6

Animated versions of the formats that keep coming back, social posts, ad sizes, lower thirds and titles, built once so marketers can swap text and imagery without a designer.

On track looks like a template set the team uses, with a clear way to request something new.

How we test for it before you meet them

We look for template work in the reel and ask who used it after they left, and how much faster each use was.

Milestone 3 of 5: A launch piece, planned and shipped

Weeks 7 to 10

One launch or campaign piece planned from script to storyboard to animatic, then animated, with sound and captions, and delivered in every size the channels need.

On track looks like a launch piece shipped on the agreed date, signed off without a redesign.

How we test for it before you meet them

We ask for a piece in their reel with its storyboard or animatic, and how much changed after sign-off. A former manager confirms it.

Milestone 4 of 5: Measured against the static version

Weeks 11 to 13

The animated assets tested against the static ones in paid and social, with the numbers read back, so the team knows where motion pays for itself and where it does not.

On track looks like at least one test with a result the team can act on, motion win or not.

How we test for it before you meet them

A reference call with a marketer about a campaign where this designer's motion work was tested, and what they learned from it.

Milestone 5 of 5: Motion as part of the brand

After day 90

Strong motion designers start writing the rules, easing, timing and transitions, so every new piece feels like the same brand, and advise on where motion adds nothing.

On track looks like a short motion guide the creative lead and freelancers follow.

How we test for it before you meet them

We ask when they would tell us not to animate something. A clear answer predicts a designer who protects the brand and the budget.

What the seat owns

Five responsibilities. If the work is mainly character and story animation, it is an animator; if it is cutting recorded footage, it is a video editor.

  1. Motion graphics for campaigns

Animated ads, social posts and launch pieces built from the brand’s assets.

  2. Animated explainers and product moments

Short pieces that show how something works, with sound, captions and a clear next step.

  3. Interface and website motion

Transitions and micro-interactions that help a visitor understand a page and never slow it down.

  4. Templates marketers can use

Editable animated formats so routine pieces do not wait on design.

  5. Delivery for every channel

Files in the sizes and formats each channel needs, with captions and safe areas checked.

What it is not

Three neighboring seats absorb work people assume belongs here. Drawing the line wrong is how a motion hire ends up animating characters or editing every webinar.

  • Animator

That seat ownsCharacter and frame-by-frame animation, 2D or 3D, for explainers and product stories.

Hire it instead whenyou need characters and storytelling more than animated graphics for ads and social.

  • Video Editor

That seat ownsCutting recorded footage into finished video: webinars, interviews, demos and short clips.

Hire it instead whenmost of your video is filmed, not built.

  • Graphic Designer

That seat ownsCampaign, sales and print assets across many formats, mostly static.

Hire it instead whenthe queue is ads, decks and one-pagers rather than anything that moves.

What they optimize
A clear story that holds attention from start to finish
Strongest background
Explainer studios or in-house launch work
Watch for
Beautiful frames with weak scripts
Works well with
A product marketer who writes a tight script

Six interview questions that separate motion designers

The scorecard every motion designer is scored against

Every candidate we put forward is scored on these five, and the scores travel with the shortlist, gaps included. Four out of five with a named weakness beats a clean sweep you cannot verify.

What a motion designer is paid in the US

Public US benchmarks, read October 2026. Salary.com’s motion designer band is close to its animator band. The BLS band runs far higher because the occupation also covers visual effects and animation for film, television and games. Built In has no motion designer page, so no self-reported figure is shown.

Each bar runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile, the middle half of reported pay.

Employer questions about hiring a motion designer

A motion designer makes graphics move: animated ads and social posts, explainers, logo stings, launch pieces and interface motion on a website or product. In a marketing team the job is as much about pace and consistency as ideas, so a good one also builds templates and keeps every piece feeling like one brand.

Salary.com puts a motion designer at $55,210 to $74,256 base, with a median of $64,319 (October 2026), close to its animator band. The BLS band for special effects artists and animators runs from $75,490 to $139,130 across all industries, higher because it includes film, television and game studios. Seniority and 3D skills move the number.

A motion designer animates graphic elements: type, icons, interface moments, transitions and short ads. An animator tells stories with characters and scenes, often frame by frame. Many people do some of both, but strong reels lean one way. For ads, social and launches, hire a motion designer; for character stories, an animator.

Freelancers suit a single campaign with a clear brief. An in-house motion designer pays off once you publish animated assets every week: they learn the brand, build templates and turn pieces around in days. Many teams keep one in-house designer for the steady queue and add freelancers for large launches. We recruit the in-house seat.

Finished business pieces, not only experiments: ads, explainers and social assets made to a deadline and inside a brand. Ask for one piece with its storyboard and how many rounds of changes it took, and for any template work others used. That shows delivery and judgment, which a ninety-second highlight reel hides.

After Effects is the standard for motion graphics, with Premiere Pro to finish and Illustrator or Figma for source files. Cinema 4D or Blender helps for 3D. Tools are learnable in weeks; timing, taste and delivery on a deadline are not, so we weigh those more heavily than a software list.

Ten working days from a signed brief to a shortlist of three to five calibrated designers, each with a reel review and our timed animation exercise scored. Interview speed decides the rest: good motion designers rarely run one process at a time, so a decision within a week of the first interview keeps them.
